Are You Already a Self Published Author But You Just Don't Realise It?
I cannot explain to you enough how much the internet has changed the way that writers work.
Being a writer used to mean writing an article proposal or a short story, mailing out several copies to different print publications, then waiting to see if you got any favourable responses.
As you can imagine, working this way meant that publication of your work was sporadic and it was impossible to make a full-time living unless you had a regular column or feature that you were contracted to write every week or every month. And even then, the pay wasn't great and because you worked freelance, if you didn't write, you didn't earn.
But now it's all changed.
If you want to publish everything you write you can. You just start up a blog or a website (or several) and publish all your writing on them. No doubt you're doing that by now. Which means, you are already a self published author. You are the author of everything you write, and it all gets published online.
Not only that but you can earn money from everything you write through Pay-Per-Click advertisements or affiliate links. You just have to make sure you have plenty of these on every page of your website or blog and you can earn money every day - whether you're working or not.
Of course, being a self published author of a website or blog isn't going to guarantee you a full-time income, but there are now so many other ways you can earn money from your writing too. And you don't need a publishing company to help you. You can do it all yourself.
For instance, you can write and publish ebook or print books. The internet and the iPhone and iPad have now made it possible for you to write a book and sell it as a downloadable ebook to anyone anywhere in the world who has a computer, iPhone, iPad or other e-reader device - and there are dozens of them around now.
Not only that, but POD printing makes it possible for you to publish all your books as print books too without the need to print thousands of copies at once. Using true POD publishing means that a book doesn't even have to be printed until someone makes a purchase.
Self publishing books used to be impossible for writers because not only was it too expensive to do, but there was no information around to tell you how to go about it even if you did have the money to do it.
But now there are many books on self publishing so all you need to do is find one that has all the information you need. And if it's an ebook, you can download it straight away and get to work immediately.
And even with all this advancement in technology, it's still possible to earn money from traditional methods such as writing an article proposal or short story and mailing it to magazines and other print publications. And now with so many glossy magazines around, it's possible to earn several hundred dollars just from writing one article or short story. And if you can write a whole series of articles or stories, it can go on earning you a substantial amount of money for months - or years.
So…if it's so easy to earn money from websites, blogs, books and magazines, why aren't you a highly paid writer?
