The thing that holds most writers back from earning a really good living from their writing is their lack of organization of their mind. What I mean by this is that they don’t really understand what it is they want to write or how much money they want to earn. In other words, they want to be a successful writer, but have no plan of how to accomplish this.
So if you want to really successful as a writer, you need a clear understanding what you SHOULD be doing to achieve your goal, and then go and do it!
And here is a list of things you need to get straight in your mind before you can begin to work efficiently and productively:
~ Get out of the poverty mentality. Writing for peanuts and being broke is not noble or romantic. You should never be broke or become the poor, starving writer. Value your work and make sure you are paid what you are worth.
~ Value your time completely. There must be no exception to this. You need to know exactly how much money you want to earn. Be certain of the hourly dollar rate you want to achieve ($50 an hour will give you a 6-figure income) and stick to it.
~ Know your writing niche or speciality. If you want to write fiction, be sure of which genre you want to write in. If you want to write non-fiction know your area of speciality whether it’s health, animals, history, etc and then write books.
~ Don’t work for low paying markets. Don’t waste your time writing if the financial gain isn’t worth it. And don’t waste time haggling for a meagre pay rise from a low-paying client. Instead go out and find someone who will pay you what you’re worth, otherwise you’ll nickel-and-dime yourself to death.
~ Don’t volunteer your valuable time away. As a writer you’ll find no end of groups and organizations that want you to come and speak to them for free. But don’t work for free. The hour that you they want you to give to them for free could be spent writing. So learn to say no more often.
~ Don’t work yourself to death. Find ways to create a passive income from writing books, eBooks, short reports and niche web sites.
~ Market yourself consistently. Never cease extolling your own virtues and explain to your potential clients how you can help them and their business and just how much you are capable of doing.
Organizing your own mind will make you sure of what you do want, what you do not want and from there, you can achieve anything.
