3 Simple Steps That Will Really Catapult Your Writing Career
Being a good writer isn't enough. You need to be a GREAT writer, because becoming a really great writer can really skyrocket your writing career and dramatically increase your writing income.
And you don't need to make dramatic changes to achieve this.
There are 3 really simple and easy things you need to do if you want to really catapult your writing career to great heights. And these aren't difficult to do nor are they expensive. And you can start right now - today.
1. The first thing you need to do is to start investing more in your writing. You need to invest more time and more money.
Writing takes time and so you have to give yourself time to write. Don't put it on your 'to do' list as something to do in your spare time. Instead MAKE the time to write. Make it a part of your every day existence.
If you work full-time, use your lunch hour to write. If you have young children, get up early to write, or wait till they are in bed at night. And if you don't work at all (or work only part-time) then you have plenty of time to write.
You also need to invest money in your writing. Over the years I've increased my income and writing business by becoming a freelance writer, author and publisher. But I didn’t learn how to do these things by magic. I invested time and money to get where I am today.
I first did a writing course to learn to improve my craft. I then did a course in web page design to help me find work as a writer. I also did a course in book publishing and established my own publishing company. And now I am currently doing a course in copy writing to help me sell more books.
I also constantly buy and read a copious amount of books about writing and book publishing to help keep me up-to-date with the ever-changing world of writing and publishing and to help me learn even more. I also like to buy beautiful pens and notepads that motivate me to keep on writing.
And you also need to do the same thing. You must invest in your writing. If you feel that you don’t have the money for this, do the same as I do. I use 10% of my income to invest in myself. This means that every month I have several hundred dollars to spend on books, courses, outsourcing and anything else I need to keep my writing and publishing businesses going and keep me moving and growing in my work.
And it's not hard to save 10% every month. Even if you feel you can't manage on less money every month, you'll find it's not difficult. Just buy one less take-away every month or one less box of beers or buy generic brands at the supermarket instead of the more expensive brands. But find a way to cut back and you'll be surprised at how much extra money you have.
2. Next you need to have more confidence in your ability as a writer because if you lack confidence, it will show in your writing.
Take 30 minutes out of your day and sit and think about the type of writer you want to be. Where do you see yourself writing? What are you writing? How much money are you earning? What kind of house do you live in? What is your life style like as a writer? Take some time to REALLY give this a lot of thought.
Then once you can SEE yourself as the kind of writer you want to be, living the kind of life you've always dreamed about, and then make a firm decision to become confident in what you do so that your dream can really become your reality. And the more you can visualize yourself as a successful writer, the more real it will become, both in your mind AND in your life.
3. Lastly, and most importantly, you need to write – a lot! It's no use saying you want to be a great writer if you never write. And don't let the fact that you have nothing to write stop you from writing.
You can practice your writing by copying the great writers. Just find a book, an article or a sales page of a writer you admire and want to be similar to, and start writing out their work, word for word. Do it by hand with a pad and pen to really get a feel for their style of writing.
This is a VERY useful exercise and can really give you an amazing insight as to how successful writers write. You'll discover things you've never notice before about their writing. Things that you normally just skim over when you're reading will jump right off the page at you once you sit down and copy it out.
So try all these 3 things right now. Sit and think about the writer you really want to be. Start copying the writers/writer you are in awe of and then invest in yourself, be confident and change your life forever through the power of your words.
