Many writers know how to make extra money from their writing, like sending a magazine article out to different markets in different countries so that they can offer “first serial rights” every time instead of the lower paid and mostly unwanted “second serial rights.”
But did you know that if you have a website you may be leaving money on the table and not making as much from it as you could?
And by that I’m talking about affiliate marketing.
Now I’m aware that if you’re a writer and you have a website or two (or three or four…) then you're probably already doing affiliate marketing and may be earning a bit on money from it on the side.
The reason I’m talking about this is because today I was adding an affiliate banner link to a couple of my websites that really, I should have added years ago, but never did.
I then began to wonder just how much money I’ve missed out on just because it never occurred to me before to add the banners?
The banners are for one of the hosting companies I use called Host Nine. I’ve been with them for 2 or 3 years now and they are a pretty decent hosting company, as in, my sites have had no down time (to my knowledge), their website is easy to use and I’ve never had any problems with them at all to date.
Several times since I’ve been with them they’ve asked if I want to join their affiliate program, but I didn’t do it. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to, but rather because I felt I didn’t have much time and couldn’t be bothered.
Then this morning I got an email from their affiliate manager saying that I still hadn’t joined and asking why. And I couldn’t think of a reason why.
I then remembered that years ago I used another hosting company called DataFlame. They were a good company to start with and then their service deteriorated. I was an affiliate of theirs and was earning decent money from it. And all I did to promote them was put one of their banners at the bottom of my web page with the words “This website is hosted by:” and that seemed to work wonders.
I think why this simple approach worked was because I was giving an endorsement because I myself used the company.
But then their service deteriorated with lots of down time for my websites and very little customer service response.
They then also refused to pay me some of my affiliate commissions (over $200 worth, but it’s a long story - the money is still in my account but they won't release it). There were other problems with them too so I removed the banner and stopped promoting them. And if you signed up with them due to my early promotion of them, I’m sorry I got you involved with such a lousy company. I usually never promote companies or products I don't fully believe in.
Anyway, I digress.
So this morning I was putting banners for Host Nine on some of my websites, again with the words “This website is hosted by:” when I started thinking about affiliate marketing in general.
Now this is a way that I make quite a decent amount of money, especially when I do it right.
Sometimes, using simple banner advertising like I’ve just described, works well. But most of the time affiliate marketing involves much more than that. It involves, buying a product, reviewing it, creating my own sales page for it, article marketing, press releases, blog marketing and much more.
What makes it easy, is that I haven’t had to create the product in the first place. I just have to take what’s already there and build on it.
But if you don’t have time right now to go full steam into marketing a product as an affiliate, at the very least put some advertising (banner links or write your own text links) on your website for it. That way, while you’re busy doing other things, the ads and banners can be working for you at the same time.
And you might make some extra money that you weren’t expecting.
If you’re not a member of any affiliate programs, or you want a few more, below are a few suggestions of programs you can join for free and start using immediately.
Host Nine Affiliate Program
This is a good program and pays out 300% commission. So if someone signs up through your affiliate link for a $25/month plan, you’ll earn $75. And if they buy a $100/month plan you’ll earn $300. This a very high paying program. And you can see the link I added to the bottom one of my websites at http://12mthchallenge.com.
Self Dev Network
This company has an affiliate program that is run through MyHelpHub.com. They sell products for writers, self help products, software and more. They pay up to 60% commission for each sale AND they pay 35 days after each sale through PayPal which is very fast payout and there is no minimum.
You can also sign up through E-Junkie.com to sell some of my ebooks
You can also promote The Wealthy Writer through my publishers, WCCL.
Promote my Kindle books through Amazon in the USA
Promote my Kindle books through Amazon in the UK
You can also do a Google search to find thousands of other affiliate programs and networks.
